Description:

The Vegetation Intern supports the inventory, monitoring, and management of plant species and vegetation communities on public lands. This position works closely with botanists and ecologists to collect plant data, assist with habitat restoration, and help protect sensitive or invasive plant species. Work is primarily field-based and contributes directly to vegetation management, resource planning, and conservation projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct vegetation surveys to identify and record plant species, community types, and habitat conditions.
  • Collect, press, and label plant specimens following standardized protocols.
  • Map populations of rare, sensitive, or invasive species using GPS and GIS tools.
  • Assist with native plant restoration, reseeding, and invasive plant control projects.
  • Record and organize field data accurately in notebooks, spreadsheets, or databases.
  • Support vegetation monitoring for range, forestry, and ecological projects.
  • Maintain field and laboratory equipment such as plant presses, GPS units, and data loggers.
  • Collaborate with botanists, range specialists, and other field staff on resource projects.
  • Follow all safety procedures and fieldwork protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Must be age 18+
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred

Prefered Qualifications:

  • Interest or coursework in botany, biology, ecology, or environmental science.
  • Ability to identify plants using field guides, keys, or digital resources.
  • Comfort working outdoors in variable weather and remote terrain.
  • Basic skills in GPS navigation, data collection, and computer software (Excel, GIS preferred).
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate field records.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Physical ability to hike, bend, and work long field days.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree in botany, biology, or natural resources preferred.

Schedule: May work 10 hr days, 4 days a week, Mon - Thurs.
